- What Is Datastore.edb File
Active4 months ago
The system that I'm looking at is Windows 7, 32bit.
- How to reduce the size of datastore.edb? If your software distribution folder consuming more disk space? Is it good to delete the folder? Hey, before you delete teh folder you have an option to defrag the datastore file to recover free disk space. This will keep you in safe zone. Datastore.edb is located at c: windows softwaredistribution software.
- There's no point in deleting DataStore.edb since it will just be rebuilt the next time Windows checks for updates. If you are just looking for stuff to delete you can empty the SoftwareDistribution Download folder.
When the system boots up it spends a ton of time reading and writing to the DataStore.edb file which is located in WindowsSoftwareDistributionDataStore directory. This makes the system run really slow for several minutes, probably about 10 if I'm honest. If you stop the Windows Update service, within a minute the system will stop reading and writing from the file and everything runs smoothly.
Initially, the datastore.edb file can be used to accomplish two things: ensuring a Windows installation uses Microsoft Update from the start and hiding any updates that need to be excluded from Windows/Microsoft Update. Other.edb files used by Windows include contacts.edb, which stores contact information in Microsoft Live products,.
Things I've tried:
I've stopped Windows Update, deleted the file, rebooted, but when I do that Windows rebuilds the file until it's a few hundred MB in size. Once Windows is happy with whatever it's doing, it stops and my disk usage and cue drop down to normal levels and the system does whatever you want with plenty of speed.
I've booted into SafeMode and run several virus scans and Kaspersky's RootKit killer tool and nobody finds anything offensive.
What should I try next?

I know it's way past the point of being able to provide a suitable solution for you now, but I have exactly the same thing with a Windows 7 machine at work. For future reference, you can always check the integrity of (
/g
) and/or defrag (/d
) *.edb files with esentutl.exe
.e.g.
esentutl.exe /d c:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDataStoreDataStore.edb
If you are unable to run this command with '-1032' error, you can boot into safemode (without networking) and run the command from there. You might first need to run it with the /p switch to repair file corruption.

RAMMap showed that
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDataStoreDataStore.edb
mapped file was wasting 400 Mb of my precious RAM.Moreover Windows Update was constantly slowing down the system in process of updating that huge file.esentutl.exe
just reduced DataStore.edb
size from slightly more than 600 Mb to slightly less that 600 MB and proved to be useless in my case.http://juneyourtech.blogspot.com/2013/06/datastoreedb-and-windows-vista.html states that deleting this file is also not an option as Windows Update would rebuild it to the same size of next run.
So I had to completely disable Windows Update Service autorun. This greatly lowered waste of RAM, CPU and disk IO. The system is much more responsive now.

Expanding upon @mafbailey 's answer (And a big thanks to you, as well!) make sure to open the command prompt as an administrator when utilizing the following command line action to have the appropriate file permissions.
I'd have been stuck had I not known =)

I have experienced the same problem with a slowly starting computer running w7 home edition. Opening email or firefox was frustrating.
On my computer, during start up, the anti virus program (windows essentials) seemed to be taking a lot of time on the
datastore.edb
file. This link about'Improve PC Performance and Stability by Properly Configuring Anti-Virus' solved the slow start up problem for me.
The solution basically involves telling the virus scanner (windows essentials) to exclude checking this file. I did the other exclusions on the windows files as well. (but i'm fine with the scanners checking my photos, even though they should be safe)

Try installing Windows Update KB3050265, released 2nd June 2015.
This is optional so you may have to look for it in Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Show all available updates > Optional, and manually install it.

I don't know why this says that I posted this in January 2013, this problem was only a few months ago in 2015. Ha!
Anyway - I'm sorry to waste everyone's time. For some reason I wasn't getting notifications about this thread until today, December 9, 2015.
I tried a number of things and ended up on the phone with the manufacturer of the device that this computer was within. It turns out that they have a bug in their implementation of Windows that causes this to happen. The only solution to the problem is to re-image the machine and hope it doesn't happen again.
This applies to Zeiss OCT machines for those who are wondering.

On Windows 10, the 'SoftwareDistribution' folder is an essential component for Windows Update, which temporarily stores files needed to install new updates to keep your device secure and with the latest fixes and improvements.
This folder is maintained by the WUAgent (Windows Update Agent), and typically, it should be left alone, but there will be times when you may need to clear its content manually in the case the Datastore and Download folders aren't synchronized, and it's preventing Windows Update from applying new updates to your PC.
Usually, if you're having trouble with Windows Update, or after updates have been applied, it's safe to empty the content of the SoftwareDistribution folder. Windows 10 will always re-download all the necessary files, or re-create the folder and re-download all the components, if removed.
In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to delete the content inside the SoftwareDistribution folder. As an alternative option, we'll also show you the steps to rename the folder, in case you only want to test if the folder's content is the one causing problems.
How to clear the 'SoftwareDistribution' folder
To delete the content inside the SoftwareDistribution folder, do the following:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator.
- Type the following command to stop the Windows Update Service and press Enter:
net stop wuauserv
- Type the following command to stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and press Enter:
net stop bits
- Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
- https://cleverdroid502.weebly.com/3d-floor-plan-software-free.html. Open File Explorer and browse the following path:
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution
- Select all its content and click the Delete button to clear the content.Quick Tip: In the case, you're having trouble deleting all the files, simply restart your computer, and try again.
- On Command Prompt, type the following command to start the Windows Update Service and press Enter:
net start wuauserv
- Type the following command to start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and press Enter:
net start bits
Once you completed the steps, Windows 10 will reconfigure the folder and re-download all the necessary components.
How to rename the 'SoftwareDistribution' folder
If you don't want to delete the content inside of the folder, you can alternatively, rename the folder to troubleshoot Windows Update problems.
To rename the SoftwareDistribution folder, do the following:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator.
- Type the following command to stop the Windows Update Service and press Enter:
net stop wuauserv
- Type the following command to stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and press Enter:
net stop bits
- Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
- Type the following command to rename the folder and press Enter:
rename %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
Quick Tip: If the command isn't letting you rename the folder, try steps No. 3 and 4 one more time, and then try to rename the folder. - Type the following command to start the Windows Update Service and press Enter:
net start wuauserv
- Type the following command to start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and press Enter:
net start bits
After you've completed the steps, Windows 10 will re-create the folder and re-download all the necessary components.
Windows Softwaredistribution Datastore Logs
The only caveat with this process is that the SoftwareDistribution folder also includes the Windows Update history information, which means that emptying up the folder will result in loss of this data. In addition, you'll notice that Windows Update will take longer than usual to detect and update your computer because the WUAgent must check and re-create the Datastore information. However, it's a small price to pay to get your device to update again.
What Is Datastore.edb File
While sometimes the folder may grow, it's only recommended to use these instructions only when necessary. You shouldn't mess with the SoftwareDistribution folder to free up storage space on your computer.
